RAS Checking

Overview
SBRasChk.dll – This is the Routing & RAS session authorization engine. SBRasChk.dll works on NT 4 Routing & RAS Routing as well as Windows 2000 Server Routing & RAS services. SBRasChk.dll authorizes and checks each RAS connection before the session is allowed to start. ISDN and multi-link users are supported by a checkbox in the Manage->Users screen that allows the user to get two connections for each 1 session you choose to allow. SBRasChk.dll is copied to the system32 folder on each licensed RAS server and launches when the RAS & Routing service is started. ServerBoss.exe is used to monitor and manage the state database where RAS users are tracked.

NOTE: Users are authorized in the following order:

  1. Total sessions for this server
  2. User restrictions
  3. Group restrictions

RAS Authorization

This feature set allows you to manage and restrict RAS server logons. It works on NT 4 RAS & Routing as well as Windows 2000 Server RAS and Routing services. The core of RAS authorization is the file SBRasChk.dll. This program is run by the RAS service and inspects all RAS connect requests. With NT4 RAS, packets are inspected and users are authorized prior to authentication. With Windows 2000 RAS, connection requests are inspected and users are authorized after they are authenticated. If a user is denied access, their connection software will display a username/password error. RAS authorization is compatible with any authentication technology supported by RAS & Routing service.

NOTE: NT 4 users MUST download and install the free Microsoft RAS & Routing add-on for NT 4 before using SBRasChk.dll. This is available from either the Microsoft or ServerBoss website.
