RADIUS Checking

Overview
SBRadChk.dll – This is the RADIUS session authorization engine. RADIUS is an authentication service that authenticates user sessions on RAS servers that are typically located outside of the local area network. SBRadChk.dll works with NT 4 RADIUS as well as Windows 2000 Server RADIUS authentication services (IAS). SBRadChk.dll authorizes and checks each RADIUS connection before the session is allowed to start. ISDN and multi-link users are supported by a checkbox in the Manage->Users screen that allows the user to get two connections for each 1 session you chooses to allow. SBRadChk.dll is copied to the system32 folder on each licensed RADIUS server and launches when the RADIUS service is started.

NOTE: Users are authorized in the following order:

  1. Total sessions for this server
  2. User restrictions
  3. Group restrictions

NOTE: Microsoft refers to its RADIUS service as “Internet Authentication Service or IAS”.

NOTE: You do not need both the RAS authorization feature set and the RADIUS authorization feature set unless you need to support both RAS and RADIUS authentication on different RAS servers.

RADIUS Authorization

This feature set allows you to manage and restrict RADIUS server logons. RADIUS authorization works on NT 4 RADIUS as well as Windows 2000 RADIUS (known as Internet Authentication Services) servers. The core of RADIUS authorization is SBRadChk.dll. The Internet Authentication Service or MS RADIUS Service runs this program. SBRadChk.dll inspects all RADIUS connection requests. With NT4 RADIUS, connection requests are inspected and users are authorized prior to authentication. With Windows 2000 RADIUS, connection requests are evaluated and users are authorized after they are authenticated. If a user is denied access, their connection software will display a username/password or similar error. RADIUS authorization is compatible with any authentication technology supported by MS RADIUS and IAS. NT 4 users will find RADIUS (Internet Authentication Services) on the NT 4 Option Pack.

You do not need both the RAS authorization feature set and the RADIUS authorization feature set unless you need to support RAS both with and without RADIUS authentication for the RAS servers you want to manage.

NOTE: The RAS and RADIUS authorization feature sets will not run on WinFrame 1.8 or NT3.51. All ServerBoss tools are supported on MetaFrame servers.
