Logon Checking - Citrix MetaFrame and WinFrame Servers, Microsoft Windows Terminal Servers and LAN Servers

Overview
The program Logonck.exe is the logon authorization program. There are two recommended ways to invoke this program, automatically on NT, 2000 and XP based machines as setup by SBSetup.exe and manually, usually as part of a logon script. Even though you would typically launch and run logonck.exe only at logon via the NT logon script or other startup script, you can run it at any time. For example, you could run it in a batch file whenever you need to check logons before allowing the user to proceed. Specify the NT logon script in the users’ profile if you want only certain users to be authorized. Logonck.exe will run on all 32-bit Windows.

NOTE: Users are authorized in the following order:

  1. Total sessions for this server
  2. IP address restrictions (Citrix and Terminal Services only)
  3. User restrictions (counts user sessions on all managed servers)
  4. Group restrictions (counts group sessions on all managed servers)

Citrix MetaFrame / WinFrame Authorization

The MetaFrame/WinFrame authorization feature set provides the ability to use ServerBoss tools on Citrix MetaFrame and Citrix WinFrame Servers. This feature set uses the Citrix API in addition to NT APIs to provide the best level of ServerBoss performance and stability on Citrix server platforms.

NOTE: Either MetaFrame/WinFrame or Terminal Server authorization feature set is required in order to purchase and use the application authorization feature set.

NOTE: RAS checking and RADIUS checking feature sets will not run on WinFrame 1.7. All other ServerBoss tools are supported on WinFrame 1.7 or greater. All ServerBoss tools are supported on MetaFrame servers.

NOTE: LAN checking is not required for Citrix or Terminal Server authorization, even when the remote clients are on the same LAN. No client configuration or software installation is required for Citrix or Terminal Server authorization.

Terminal Server Authorization

All ServerBoss tools are supported on Windows NT 4 Terminal Server Edition and Windows 2000 servers.
Terminal Server authorization provides the ability to use ServerBoss tools on Windows NT 4 Terminal Server Edition, Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server terminal services. This Feature Set uses the MS Terminal Server API in addition to NT APIs to provide the best level of ServerBoss performance and stability on all Microsoft Terminal Services server platforms.

NOTE: LAN checking is not required for Citrix or Terminal Server authorization, even when the remote clients are on the same LAN. No client configuration or software installation is required for Citrix or Terminal Server authorization.

LAN Authorization

All NT 3.5x through Windows 2000 servers can benefit from the ServerBoss LAN authorization feature set. LAN authorization is run on a workstation to manage logons to that workstation. LAN Sessions are generally created when a user maps a drive or connects to a shared folder or other network resource on a LAN server. Logonck.exe will authorize these types of LAN sessions. Logonck.exe will run on all 32-bit Windows platforms. Group checking is not available on Windows 95/98 LAN clients.

NOTE: Logonck.exe closes when authorization is finished and will not perform authorization again until it is explicitly launched, typically from a logon script.

NOTE: Citrix and Terminal Server sessions do not necessarily create a LAN session to another server.

NOTE: This feature set is not a requirement for any other feature set. When logging on to a Terminal Server or Citrix server on from a LAN this feature set is still not needed.
