LAN Server Checking

Overview
The program Logonchk.exe is the logon authorization program. There are two recommended ways to invoke this program, automatically on NT, 2000 and XP based machines as setup by SBSetup.exe and manually, usually as part of a logon script. Even though you would typically launch and run Logonchk.exe only at logon via the NT logon script or other startup script, you can run it at any time. For example, you could run it in a batch file whenever you need to check logons before allowing the user to proceed. Specify the NT logon script in the users’ profile if you want only certain users to be authorized. Logonchk.exe will run on all 32-bit Windows.

NOTE: Users are authorized in the following order:

  1. Total sessions for this server
  2. User restrictions (counts user sessions on all managed servers)
  3. Group restrictions (counts group sessions on all managed servers)

LAN Authorization

LAN Server Checking authorization is run on a workstation to manage logons to that workstation BASED SOLELY ON SERVER SESSIONS I.E. SHARE CONNECTIONS. LAN sessions to a server are generally created when a user maps a network drive or connects to a shared folder or other network resource on a LAN server. Logonchk.exe counts LAN Server sessions to determine whether a user is authorized to logon to the workstation based on user’s and groups SERVER Sessions. Logonchk.exe will run on all 32-bit Windows platforms. Group authorization is not available on Windows 95/98 LAN clients. This is the only feature set which requires client computers to be configured for ServerBoss authorization using SBSetup.exe.

NOTE: Logonchk.exe closes when authorization is finished. Logonchk.exe will not perform authorization again until it is explicitly launched, typically from the NT logon script.

NOTE: Citrix ICA and Terminal Server RDP sessions are not the same as LAN sessions.

NOTE: This feature set is not a requirement for any other feature set. When logging on to a Terminal Server or Citrix server from a LAN using an ICA or RDP client, this feature set is still not needed.
