Application Checking - with Citrix MetaFrame Servers and Microsoft Windows Terminal Servers

Overview
SBAppChk.exe - This is the application authorization program. To use SBAppChk.exe you copy it to the location(s) of the application exe that you configured in ServerBoss.exe under Manage->Applications. Then you rename the configured exe to SB + original exe name. For example winword.exe would be renamed to sbwinword.exe. Then rename SBAppChk.exe to the configured exe name, i.e. winword.exe. User shortcuts should not be changed. The user, group and server checking runs, then the renamed target application, sbwinword.exe in this example, is launched only

after authorization is approved. If you use shortcuts you may want to change the icon displayed for the shortcut as the icon may change to the ServerBoss icon after SBAppChk.exe is renamed to the application name.

NOTE: SBAppChk.exe authorizes users in the following order:

1. Checks overall application restrictions (counts launches on all restricted servers)
2. Checks user application restrictions (counts user application launches on all restricted servers)
3. Checks group application restrictions (counts group application launches on all restricted servers)

NOTE: SBAppChk.exe works in Citrix and Terminal Services environments only. It works great with Citrix NFuse and Extranet.

NOTE: SBAppChk.exe will pass standard parameters but not DDE information.

Application Authorization

ServerBoss uses SBAppChk.exe to limit the number of application launches by total launches, user, group and server. The default setting is one launch of an application per user and can be set in ServerBoss.exe, System Options or a different default set per Server. To use this feature set you must also have either MetaFrame/WinFrame authorization AND/OR Terminal Server authorization. 32-bit Windows applications, 16-bit Windows applications and 16-bit DOS applications are all supported.

SBAppChkAlt.exe is provided for applications that don’t run if renamed.

SBDOSApp.exe is provided for managing and restricting DOS applications.

Be sure to read the NFuse and Program Neighborhood section if you plan to use either technology.

NOTE: Application Checking cannot authorize applications running locally on a workstation. It only authorizes applications running from Citrix or Terminal servers.

NOTE: Application Checking authorization works great with Citrix NFuse and Citrix Extranet products.
